Random Video Update: Ponyo On The Cliff

(Note: the original video I had linked was removed or something. I tracked down the same video on YouTube and tried to imbed it here again but the fucker won’t work. Just click here for the damn thing since WordPress is being a shit head right now.)

Ain’t It Cool news reported on Sunday that they had a trailer for the next Studio Ghibli forum and was kind enough to provide a YouTube video for me to steal and imbed on this blog. Go ahead and give the trailer a look if you haven’t already. Note the blabbering anchors who don’t shut up and just let you watch the damn thing in peace.

You might notice that this is probably the craziest thing you’ve seen in past hour or so, depending on how internet-savvy you are and if you have access to sites like 4chan. The footage on it’s own is pretty wild but the downright creepy-ass music playing on top of it did little to calm my nerves. Have you ever wanted to punch children before? You likely did while you watched this.

It was interesting to see the anchors reacting to the trailer as it played. I don’t quite know what they’re saying other than “cute” a whole bunch of times but they really ramped up the excitement for me. It sounded to me like at one point, where the strange-looking thing sleeping atop the jellyfish disappeared from the screen, that the male anchor got really fucking worried about where the aquatic character went when the trailer switched to a wide shot of the ocean. When the jellyfish surfaces and the freaky creature atop it re-appears he seems genuinely relieved that it came back. I think guys like this are the reason ball-in-a-cup was so popular at one point in history.

As for the trailer itself, I wasn’t surprised at all to see such astounding animation from the likes of Studio Ghibli. But I dare say that Miyazaki might not be behind the helm on this one, and I’m basing that guess on the appearance of what appears to be the male lead. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Miyazaki draw a character like him, even in a crowd of people in the background, so I’m wondering if the guy is finally making good on his promise to lay off and let other people do some work like he said he would in Howl’s Moving Castle. Of course, I could be wrong and he’s being the obsessive control freak he’s always been. I don’t think he’s let someone else direct since Whisper of the Heart, though.
